Welcome to Mad Owl Photography. My name is Joel and I am an
amateur but very committed landscape and nature photographer.
Photography has been a lifelong interest that I am now able to give
serious attention.
Over the past ten years I have attended many professionally lead
photo workshops, starting in Iceland. It was there that I first faced my
lack of experience and knowledge of the art of photography.
Fortunately, our tour leader was (and still is) a very accomplished
professional. The “crash” course from Joseph Rossbach was humbling
but I learned a lot and it confirmed to me that I really wanted to pursue
landscape photography. You can visit Joe’s website at
JosephRossbach.com.
Since that first adventure, I have attended workshops in Acadia
NP, Olympic NP, The Patagonia, Utah, Death Valley, the Badlands the
Smokey Mountains and a second trip to Iceland.
Some of these trips were led by Kurt Budliger. It was Kurt that
took my photography to the next level. His tutelage has been
instrumental in advancing my photography skills in terms of not only
taking and processing photos, but also in appreciating the art. You can
visit Kurt at (KurtBudliger.com or Greenmtnphotoworkshops.com).
As an aside, my website name comes from my upbringing in
Madawaska, Maine. The town name comes from the Maliseet word
meaning “land of the porcupines”. Fortunately, our high school mascot
was not the porcupine but, yes you guessed it, an owl! I had considered
using the name Mad Owl for a while and then, while in the Patagonia,
we had the opportunity to photograph a Pigmy Owl (see the Patagonia
Gallery), whose stare suggests a little irritation! I knew I had the right
name!
Please look around the website and let me know what you think.
It is my intention to continue with this hobby and maybe consider
offering some of these photos for sale. I greatly appreciate your visit.
